We spent three days in Santa Fe, New Mexico and one of the highlights for me was visiting the Georgia O’Keeffe museum there. I’ve always admired her and love her work. She was so innovative with her color and spare images. She left New York and moved to New Mexico in 1949 and painted there until her death in 1986. The museum in Santa Fe has a great collection of her work and we spent an afternoon there.
Santa Fe is a really pretty town and full of galleries and museums, as we all know. It was much less touristy than I feared, even on Memorial Day weekend. We bought some beautiful Navajo earrings for me and a copper bookmark inlaid with turquoise for Walter. Great for his kindle. 🙂
The next day we drove an hour to Abiquiu to tour Georgia O’Keeffe’s home there. I’ve always wanted to see it and it didn’t disappoint. It’s an old adobe home (modernized for her) in a beautiful setting on a hill. You can recognize the views she painted in and around this home. I always find it so moving to be in a space where an artist I admire actually sat and painted. Walter is a good sport about my obsession and he also enjoys these visits. I swear.
